FILM: I ONLY LIKE ICE IN MY RASPADO

3D OBJECT

FILM

“I Only Like Ice in my Raspado” documents two sites located at Alameda Street. The film juxtaposes both Olvera Street, a place where Mexican culture is romanticized and celebrated, and the Metropolitan Detention Center (MDC), a federal detention facility that allows I.C.E. (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) to detain undocumented migrants. These two places are relatively close to one another yet, they are distant in terms of mobility and visibility. Drawing from the voices of two #OccupyIceLA activists, the film moves beyond the façade of tourism and mobility on Alameda Street by highlighting the social and political struggles also taking place on the street. “I Only Like Ice in my Raspado” makes Olvera Street and MDC visible and transforms Alameda Street into a contested space where mobility is not based solely in terms of physical mobility, but in various acts of solidarity.
