“More Than CHINAtown” explores the lives of business owners in Los Angeles Chinatown. It historically served as an ethnic enclave for Chinese immigrants but has grown to become a port of entry people primarily from Southeast Asia. we recreate the overwhelming sensory experience visitors feel as they traverse through Chinatown. This is represented through multilingual signage and multilingual transactional dialogues on the map. Beyond the visual and auditory facade, we dive into narratives of people who manage a small business in Chinatown. We show that there's a correlation between the narratives collected and the signage and concentration of languages centered around those businesses. Shifts in multiplicity manifest themselves in certain areas on the map. In short, Chinatown is more than a singular identity.
