MAP: WHOSE HISTORY?

MAP

Exposing the plurality of narratives masked by the singular facade at El Pueblo De Los Angeles and Union Station.

Certain narratives have been selected to be preserved throughout history to promote a particular agenda. Monuments of groups that have had significant occupation at the El Pueblo De Los Angeles and Union Station sites such as the Chinese-Americans, Gabrielino-Tongva, Italian-Americans, and French, have been fragmented, minimized, or altogether erased due to practices of selective preservation. “Thick Monuments” are exposed in the map that explore the inaccessible and hidden layers of these non-dominant histories today. Focusing on Union Station and El Pueblo to explore whose histories are currently represented on site, the map exposes the lack of cultural pluralities represented through monuments.
